Ferret Behavior - 19 Antics You Should Be Aware Of

If you are curious about ferret behavior, then you will be happy to learn about the wonderful traits for which ferrets are famous. Today, we'll outline the basics of ferret behavior. The more you know about ferret behavior and personality, the better you will be able to enjoy your own ferret.

Here is a list of some common ferret behavior:

  • Chirping - kinda like ferrret purring - usually means they're happy
  • Hissing - frightened or angry
  • Screaming - frightened, injured or very unhappy
  • Digging - self-explanatory but try to focus them in appropritate places (ie. not their litter box)* Rolling - self-expanatory, playful
  • Scratching - they do this quite a bit and it's normal - but do check for fleas regularly
  • Sneezing - again pretty normal by itsef but watch for runny nose, coughing and lethargy
  • Tail-wagging - a happy and excited ferret* Tail puffs up - could either be frightened or excited - depends on the circumstances
  • Tipping food or water bowls - usually just being playful but should be discouraged for sanitary reasons
  • Hiding objects - focus them towards a favorite toy
  • "Scooting" backwards, trying to move objects - fun to watch
  • Backing into corners - getting ready to defecate or frightened (puffed-up & hissing)
  • Nip & flip - each other and their toys - fine as long as there are no injuries
  • Chasing - each other, you and their toys
  • Toe-nipping - trying to entice play but should be discouraged
  • Wrestling - normal but keep an eye out for injuries or over-doing-it.
  • Dancing - maybe "moshing" would be a more appropritate word - it's their happy dance!
  • War dance - looks similar to dancing but with puffed fur and hissing - NOT their happy dance.
As you can see from the above list, ferrets are crazy little critters! The best way for you to learn about ferret behavior is by enjoying your own ferrets. Quietly observe them yourself and you will gain a wealth of knowledge about these fascinating little friends. They like to play hard but always use common sense and don't let things get out of control.
